Doing so afforded me the opportunity to reinforce my knowledge of the target languages, build my self-confidence, and the experience was a thoroughly enjoyable. Given the lengthy delay between the publication of Phase III and the subsequent phases, I had already moved on to more advanced … and more condensed … materials, thereby surpassing the level of materials that Phases IV and V nonetheless, I chose to complete them. If you responded well to the teaching technique in the previous levels, you will find the learning experience in phases IV and V somehow even more enjoyable. While this does not constitute a complete review, it does help reinforce the learning that occurred in Phases I, II, and III. Generally speaking, these phases continue to expand the “core vocabulary” that an adult would encounter while travelling through the region, either on vacation or on business, where the target language dominates.Īs to be expected, phases IV and V continue introduce more advanced verb tenses, moods, voices, and sentence structures, and as for the preceding levels, the student must “infer” the grammar from the lesson materials.Ī nice feature of Phases IV and V is that a portion of the vocabulary and grammatical structures of the previous levels is woven seamlessly into the new lessons. The lessons themselves include more idiomatic expressions than do the previous levels and the Reading Booklets are more supportive of the goal of acquiring the language.

I believe that that a more representative number for new vocabulary would be somewhere between 250 and 300 words per phase and this comment applies to Phases IV and V, as well.

In my opinion, in order to achieve these numbers, the publisher must have counted as a “new word” every variant in the word family (gender, number, case, noun, adjective, adverb, verb conjugation). Simon & Schuster promotes the Pimsleur courses as introducing 500 to 600 new words per phase.

To give you a better idea of what’s included in each course, I took a closer look at the Spanish, Egyptian Arabic, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, and Mandarin courses.I have completed the Pimsleur IV and V phases for German, Spanish, and Italian and I have skimmed over the comparable phases for Pimsleur French. While the conversations you’ll hear in each course are pretty similar, the depth and features of each course are different.

One thing that’s important to note is that each Pimsleur language course is different. Other major language apps, like Rosetta Stone, Babbel, and Mondly, make you subscribe to each language individually. If you want to learn multiple languages, there is a separate subscription that lets you access all courses. When you subscribe to the Pimsleur app, you get access to one language course. This is the list of languages offered by Pimsleur: Albanian, Arabic (Eastern), Arabic (Egyptian), Arabic (Modern Standard), Armenian (Eastern), Armenian (Western), Chinese (Cantonese), Chinese (Mandarin), Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dari Persian, Dutch, Farsi Persian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Haitian Creole, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Indonesian, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Ojibwe, Pashto, Polish, Portuguese (Brazilian), Portuguese (European), Punjabi, Romanian, Russian, Spanish (Latin American), Spanish (Spain-Castilian), Swahili, Swedish, Swiss German, Tagalog, Thai, Turkish, Twi, Ukrainian, Urdu, and Vietnamese.
